Cupping Therapy
Cupping can help modulate pain, decrease inflammation, increase blood flow, and promote relaxation.
What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of holistic therapy whereby suction cups are placed on the skin to create a negative pressure environment. This pressure decreases pressure in muscle tissue as well as fascial tissue surrounding muscle. Cupping can help modulate pain, decrease inflammation, increase blood flow, and promote relaxation.
Who Can Benefit?
Almost anyone can benefit from cupping therapy. Individuals with mobility deficits, tight muscles, post surgical scars are some examples. Due to the nature of the treatment, cupping can also help with severe and chronic pain and relief of trigger point.
What to expect during/after treatment
During treatment the clinician will examine areas of concerns or dysfunction to determine the best course of action with cupping therapy. The desired area will be oiled up and suction cups will be placed. The patient will experience tension in this region during the treatment. If desired, the physiotherapist or chiropractor can also manipulate and move the cups to increased the affect they offer.
Typically 4-6 cups are placed in a desired area (depending on size of area) for approximately 5-10 minutes. Once treatment is complete the patient will be left with fairly large red suction spots that will reduce and clear up in a few days.
